Hiking Tips:
1. Waterfall "Fallbach" round trip:
Short Description:
This hiking tour starts in the valley Maltatal and will take you around the highest waterfall of Carinthia, the Fallerfall (higher than 200 m!). Enjoy a spectacular view of the area from the platform half way up the path which leads to the top of the waterfall.

Approach:
From the village Malta drive approx. 3 km further into the valley to Koschach. Park at the first car park on the right (sign for the path "Schlüsselsteig", information board).

Directions:
From the car park follow the marked path "Schlüsselsteig" uphill. Half way up the waterfall you can turn to the view point platform (approx. 5 min., very recommendable). Go back onto the main path to the top of the waterfall (safe walking in alpine terrain is absolutely necessary!). Cross the river Fallbach on a small bridge and follow the path leading uphill to a hut, Schlüsselhütte (private); walk on a road a little bit further into the valley, then turn left. A marked path leads back to the valley Maltatal. Follow the main road out of the valley, passing the climbing area "Kreuzwand". Then, turn left and follow a marked path back to the bottom of the waterfall. From there, by passing Gasthaus Faller, it will take you about 10 min. back to the starting point.

2.5 - 3.5 hours

Further Information:
From the hut Schlüsselhütte it is also possible to hike down on the road to Falleralm (toll station of the pay road Malta-Hochalmstrasse), approx. 1 hour

2. Naturlehrweg "Malteiner Wasserspiele":
Short Description:
As soon as you have done this beautiful hike, you will know why the valley Maltatal is also called "the valley of the falling waters". From the toll station of the road Malta-Hochalmstrasse, the path leads along numerous waterfalls, canyons, and spectacular cascades. At 18 marked stopping points hikers can inform themselves about the extraordinary nature life of the Maltatal.

Approach:
From the village Malta drive approx. 9 km further into the valley to the toll station of the Malta-Hochalmstrasse (Gasthaus Falleralm).

Starting Point:
car park at Gasthaus Falleralm (911 m)

Directions:
Starting at Gasthaus Falleralm, the trail passes various ponds like the Fallertümpfe, the small bridge Hochsteg, Melnikfall, Veidlbaueralm, and Hochbrücke to the hut Gmünder Hütte, approx. 5 km further into the valley. The last stopping point of the nature path is located at the pond "Blauer Tumpf" near the rock face Lange Wand.

Time required:
approx. 2 hours up and 1.5 hours down

approx. 290 m up and down

Further Information:
The first part of the hike is also a very nice round trip. In spring 2002 an information path about the life of bees, "Bienenlehrpfad", was established here.

3. Stubeck:
Short description:
Maltaberg is a perfect starting point for beautiful hikes to the mountains Faschaunereck (2612 m), Reitereck (2790 m), Stubeck (2370 m), and various other peaks. From there, you will have an extraordinary view, from the romantic hills of Nockberge National Park in the east to the huge, snow covered mountains with glaciers of the Hohe Tauern Range in the west. The easy hike to Stubeck offers a unique overlook of the region Lieser-Maltatal

Approach:
From the village Gmünd into the valley Maltatal to Malta; go through Malta, pass the church and follow a steep road uphill for about 7 km until you reach Maltaberg (1620 m). You can park at the huts Kramer or Leonhardhütte.

Starting Point:
car parks at Kramer and Leonhardhütte

Directions:
approx. 100 m past the Kramer Hütte turn right onto trail # 557. Follow the path uphill until hitting the road which comes from the hut Frido-Kordon-Hütte. From there, hike slightly uphill over a broad crest to the peak.

Time required:
car park - peak: 2.5 - 3 hours

Vertical meters:
750 hm

Bases:
huts Kramer Hütte (open from the beginning of June until mid October) and Leonhardhütte (open all year round)

Further Information:
Stubeck can also be reached from the hut Frido-Kordon-Hütte. It is a very nice hike and takes about 2.5 hours to the top.
